TAOS AIR announced Friday (May 6) it would resume flights between Taos Regional Airport (SKX) and destinations in California and Texas, operating flights twice a week to and from each of four cities in the Southwest. The summer season will begin July 1 and run until Sept. 27.

The non-stop, public charter flights will travel to Dallas (DAL), Austin (AUS), Hawthorne–Los Angeles (HHR) and Carlsbad–San Diego (CLD). Other routes are not planned at this time, but could be added.

Taos Ski Valley resort owns Taos Air, and operates two Dornier 328 jets that seat 30 passengers each. Ticket prices are comparable to mainstream commercial flights.

Taos Air began seasonal flights to cities in Texas beginning in 2018, and in California beginning in 2019. The airline suspended its operations in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve been hearing from travelers how eager they are to get back on Taos Air,” said Joe Zvada, director of aviation for Taos Ski Valley. “As travel regains momentum, we know the experience Taos Air offers will be the perfect way to kick-off a visit to Northern New Mexico.”

“You can get people here, but if they don’t have money to spend, that doesn’t help the businesses,” said Taos Town manager Rick Bellis, who has commissioned demographic studies of tourists visiting the region. “The people that go to galleries, that eat out, that stay here. They don’t just come for the weekend, they stay for three, four or five days,” he said.

Taos Air will need to market its services to those tourists if it hopes to expand to year-round flights.

“For every so many people that come here, there’s a percentage of those that will be repeat visitors,” said Bellis. “For every percentage of repeat visitors, there will be those that are part-time homeowners, some of those become full-time homeowners, some of those bring their businesses.”
