Songs to Water

‘SONGS TO WATER,” is the title of Tizia O’Connor’s upcoming show at the Bareiss Gallery this weekend.

O’Connor is a well known Ayurvedic practitioner here in Taos, but is also a talented artist who works with Japanese ink-wash techniques.

She and her fellow artist husband, photographer, and sculptor Paul O’Connor, spent several years in France living on a boat during the early years of their relationship; their adult daughter Sophie, was born there. So these songs to water are born from both a deep remembrance and longing, along with a commitment to sustainable ecology.

O’Connor once said that during their seven years in France (where she is from) with their daughter, she often wondered why they were hanging onto their Hondo Mesa home. The Earth Ship she and her husband built and have lived in for over two decades includes a casita that is used only for

Tizias practice, has sustained them during their time here, but the couple has now rented the property, bought a new boat, and are headed back to Europe soon after this show.

The Mediterranean’s siren song has called them back, for now, and perhaps O’Connors water songs have played a small part in their return to sea.

“This is a celebration made for our rivers and oceans, all painted on layered silk and rice paper, with natural pigments and inks. I have been working on this particular body of work for the last two years,” said O’Connor.

“Songs to Water” by Tizia O’Connor opened at the Bareiss Gallery on Oct. 9.The show will remain on exhibit through Oct. 21, by appointment.
