Waning Calf Canyon– Hermits Peak Fire to be downgraded
The Calf Canyon–Hermits Peak Fire is being downgraded from a Type 2 to a Type 3 incident.
The change to a less serious designation “is a result of the work accomplished by several incident management teams over the course of this incident,” the U.S. Forest Service said in a news release Wednesday announcing it.
“Although the burn area received rain this past week, crews continued to make excellent progress with fire suppression repair operations on private lands, dozer lines, roads, and culverts,” the Forest Service said. “Crews completed the timber salvage removal and are now repairing dozer lines and rehabilitating roads impacted by those operations.”
An open house for residents impacted by the fire is being held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center at 1751 N. Grand Ave. in Las Vegas, N.M. Representatives of various local, state and federal agencies will be there to provide information about available assistance.
The Forest Service also said it plans to reopen some areas of the Camino Real Ranger District in Carson National Forest as of Wednesday. Current closure and restriction information is available at fs.usda. gov/alerts/santafe/alerts-notices and fs.usda.gov/alerts/carson/ alerts-notices.
Private landowners can continue to request fire suppression repair work by calling 720-417-8048.
