That’s good bingo

On the Eagle’s Club bulletin board, there’s a post celebrating 2022 Taos News Unsung Hero Stella Mares-McGinnis for her longtime contributions to the community. She is quoted as saying “Community work is what it is all about.”

That same spirit of generosity was paid in-kind on Sunday (Jan. 22) when 175 members of the community showed up for the Special Olympics Bingo Fundraiser, with all the proceeds from the Bingo and raffle going to the Special Olympics team coached by Yavanne Jaramillo.

With bingo cards going for $10 a pack (not to mention the numerous raffle tickets sold), the fundraiser netted close to $2,000, although an exact number had yet to be tallied as of press time Tuesday (Jan. 24). Local merchants provided several pricey prizes for those who purchased raffle tickets.

Local billiards organizer and sharpshooter Stephen Montoya won a gift certificate to Martyrs in the raffle; Roberta Martinez won a landscape painting by Pete Bernal. Taho Morris took home the coveted prize donated by Phillip Maestas, a big wooden swing with a bench that can accommodate two people. (It only required some disassembly and maneuvering the lofty swing through the doors of the Eagle’s Club.)

According to coach Jaramillo, the next fundraiser will be in the summer after the Special Olympic State Summer Games take place in mid-May.
