Bergit Merstetter

Born March 21, 1932, in Berlin, Germany, to father, August Theodor Holombek and mother, Anna Geborene Sabrowski. Bergit was the youngest of five siblings: brothers Alfred and Werner, sisters Sigrid and Helga, and half-sister Anna (Anita) Sabrowski. Bergit is survived by her sister, Helga Holombek of Berlin, Germany, two sons, Bert (Beth) Holombek of Ovilla,TX, and Raymond (Sharon) Nichols of Las Vegas, NV; three grandchildren: Preston Nichols, Emily Holombek, and Stephen (Dylana) Holombek. Bergit also leaves extended family in Germany, nephew Peter, great-nephew Tobin, and niece Marlise Kutschick. She will be greatly missed by many, including her adopted family in New Mexico, Karen Blair, Allegra Sleep, Bradley Sleep, and Christy Schwathe. Bergit’s life growing up in Berlin, Germany in her early years during and post WWII was arduous. She came to the US via Canada in 1956 and lived in San Francisco. She moved to New Orleans for four years, and then to Dallas, TX where she was granted her US Citizenship in 1973. While in Dallas she worked at Texas Instruments on the Bubble Memory project. In 1981 Bergit moved to Costilla, NM to be near her sister Sigrid Maloney. Bergit lived in her home on the historic Costilla Plaza square for 38 years and loved working on her 140-year-old adobe home. She enjoyed cooking and baking, hiking, growing geraniums, petunias and African Violets. Visitors traveling through northern New Mexico over the years often stopped at the Plaza and admired her beautiful flowers in the planters out front. Bergit was active in Costilla and Taos communities, with arts, festivals and community service. For health reasons, Bergit moved to Taos, NM in 2018 before eventually moving in with her son Raymond in Las Vegas, NV before her death on December 4, 2022. Interment of her ashes will be scheduled for the spring time in Amalia, NM where Bergit will join her sister, Sigrid, in the beautiful Amalia Cemetery with services at Santo Niño church.
